My Digital Superheros

Ada Lovelace

Birth: December 10, 1815

Death: November 27, 1852

Major Academic Events: She was an english mathematician, an associate of Charles Babbage, for whose prototype of a digital computer she created a program and was called the first computer programmer.

Contributions to Computer Science: Even though she wrote about a computer, the Analytical Engine, that was never built, she realized that the computer could follow a series of simple instructions, a program, to perform a complex calculation.

Alan Turing

Birth: June 23, 1912

Death: June 7, 1954

Major Academic Events: Often considered the father of modern computer science, Alan Turing was famous for his work developing the first modern computers, decoding the encryption of German Enigma machines during the second world war, and detailing a procedure known as the Turing Test, forming the basis for artificial intelligence.

Contributions to Computer Science: He invented one of the core concepts of theoretical computer science (the Turing machine), while also building practical computing machines that helped crack the Enigma code – an accomplishment that would remain secret for many years after.

Tim Berners-Lee

Birth: June 8, 1955

Major Academic Events: What are the notable achievements of Timothy Berners-Lee? In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, an Internet-based hypermedia initiative for global information sharing while at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory. He wrote the first web client and server in 1990. His specifications of URIs, HTTP and HTML were refined as web technology spread.

Contributions to Computer Science: He devised the hypertext markup language (HTML) for formatting web documents, and programmed the first web server to store and transmit them.
